The 1st International Symposium On Rural Landscapes and Localities (ISRL): Sustainable Agriculture in The Midst of Current Agrarian Change

ISRL 2019 is the 1st International Symposium on Rural Landscapes and Localities held by Department of Agrosocioeconomic Faculty of Agriculture Universitas Padjadjaran (UNPAD) in collaboration with Agrarian Resources Center (ARC). The symposium will be held on November 18th, 2019 at the Bale Sawala Rectorate Building in Jatinangor, Indonesia.

Taking “Sustainable Agriculture in The Midst of Current Agrarian Change” as the main theme, this international symposium is a broad-based meeting with focus on people based plantation and rural life for sustainable agriculture as well as agrarian equity. This agrarian change of the century is marked by ‘extractivism’ and increasingly widespread land grabbing – one of which is for agro-industries producing multipurpose commodities (flex-crops), deeper penetration of capital in rural areas accompanied by with massive ecological destruction, and at the same time the state is increasingly losing its power to provide protection. The formation of classes and patterns of the mobilization of labor (labor regime) in the rural which is characterized by a variety of processes of de-peasantisation, proletarization, as well as re-peasantisation take place very dynamically. Smallholder farmers/planters are in the midst of these agrarian changes: squeezed, defended and trying to develop a midst the current expansion of large plantations which are now almost reaching 17 million hectares – 3.5 million hectares of which are right inside the forest area (Kehati 2019). In the midst of the ‘agrarian extractivism’ of giant corporations, the sustainability and future of people based plantations in a big question mark.

The symposium is held to bring together researchers, environmental institutions, practitioners, and academia to give a new insight in agrarian changes, to exchange and present new research result and experiences in the field of agrarian studies. By then, this conference is bridging to increase the opportunity of collaboration for solving present and future people based agriculture.
